MANILA, Philippines – Grammy-winning singer Alicia Keys has visited an air force base in Manila to bring cheer to hundreds of evacuees from eastern Philippine provinces wracked by Typhoon Haiyan earlier this month.
The American singer distributed crayons and coloring books to children at the Villamor Air Base grandstand, where evacuees from eastern Leyte and Samar provinces arrive via C-130 planes.
Social Welfare Department officer Jane Abello says Keys stayed for about half an hour on Monday to chat with evacuees.
The R & B star is back in Manila for the second time for a concert at the seaside MOA Arena.
The Philippine Star earlier quoted her as saying that “music has a way of lifting your spirit and that’s what I hope to do for the Filipino people.”

Look out for the Pinoy Grease directed by Giselle Toengi. I’m excited to see this, how about you?

LOS ANGELES- Former ABS- CBN actress Giselle Toengi is now working behind the scenes. Toengi is in her last year as a student at the University of California Los Angeles. She is majoring in communications while getting minors in Film and Theater. She is directing a new version of the musical “Grease” with a mostly Filipino cast.
Toengi said, “A lot of people are asking me what I’m going to do after college. And I’m going to continue do what I’ve been doing all this time. Acting being creative and collaborating with our Filipino American artists, and just producing content for the Filipino American community.”
Most of the cast includes members of the UCLA’s Samahan Filipino club, but Toengi brought out some big Fil-Am Hollywood names for this project.
Former Nickelodeon star Leslie Anne Huff plays the female lead opposite Dante Basco. YouTube sensation AJ Rafael, singer actress Jenilee Reyes, and former Philippine child actor Tom Taus also appear alongside the entire Basco Clan. “Grease” brings back childhood memories for the Basco family.
Michael Copon not only acts in the film, the teen heart throb turned musician also produced the soundtrack.
They’re saying this “Grease” class project is just a beginning for something bigger. With Copon on set with the Basco’s, they’ve also talked about venturing into a bigger project for Hollywood Fil-Ams to work on, which includes possible movies and reality shows.
With the popularity of musicals like Fox Network’s “Glee” Fil-Am stars are hoping to use an American classic as a launching pad. They’re hoping they can expand on the class project and make in to a new hit series.
This pic of Michael Copon and Bruno Mars after the Grammy’s was captured with Michael’s manager Brett Lazar’s cell phone. Apparently, somebody who had a few drinks took the pic and cut out Brett lol
These two will be touring in the Philippines together.
